Understanding Flat Feet: What You Need to Know

Do your feet feel tired or achy after a long day on your feet? Do your shoes wear unevenly, or have you been told you have “fallen arches”? You might be one of the millions of people who have flat feet, a common condition that can impact your overall foot health and quality of life.

Flat feet, or pes planus, occur when the arches on the inside of the feet flatten out when standing. In some people, this is simply how their feet develop. For others, it can result from injury, aging, or certain medical conditions like arthritis or diabetes.

While some people with flat feet experience no issues, others may notice:

-Pain that radiates up to the knees, hips, or lower back

-Foot pain or fatigue, especially in the arches or heels

-Swelling along the inner ankle

-Difficulty standing on tiptoe

While some people with flat feet experience no issues, others may notice:

  • Foot pain or fatigue, especially in the arches or heels
  • Swelling along the inner ankle
  • Difficulty standing on tiptoe
  • Pain that radiates up to the knees, hips, or lower back

If you’re experiencing any of these symptoms, it’s a good idea to consult a podiatrist.

Flat feet can be:

  • Acquired – due to posterior tibial tendon dysfunction (PTTD), obesity, pregnancy, or injury
  • Age-related – arches can weaken over time, especially with increased strain

Even if flat feet aren’t painful at first, they can lead to problems over time. Without proper arch support, your body’s alignment may shift, placing strain on joints and muscles. This can increase your risk for conditions such as:

  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Shin splints
  • Bunions or hammertoes
  • Knee, hip, or lower back pain

At South Dublin Podiatry we evaluate flat feet through a combination of physical exams, gait analysis, and imaging if needed. Treatment depends on the severity of symptoms and underlying causes. Common approaches include:

Custom orthotics – Provide arch support and correct alignment
Stretching & strengthening exercises – Especially for the calf and posterior tibial tendon
Supportive footwear – Shoes with good arch support and cushioning
Weight management – Helps reduce strain on the feet

If flat feet are causing you discomfort, interfering with your mobility, or contributing to other issues, don’t wait. Early diagnosis and intervention can prevent more serious complications down the line.

At South Dublin Podiatry we specialise in diagnosing and treating flat feet and other foot-related concerns. Whether you’re dealing with pain, imbalance, or just looking for the right footwear, we’re here to support you every step of the way.
