Tips & Advice From South Dublin Podiatry

The Benefits of Ultrasound in Advanced Biomechanical Assessments

At South Dublin Podiatry, we’re committed to providing the highest standard of care through evidence-based practice and the latest technology. As part of our Advanced Biomechanical Assessment, offered once a month, we now include ultrasound imaging to assist in identifying underlying foot and lower limb conditions with greater accuracy.

What is Ultrasound Imaging?

Ultrasound imaging is a safe, non-invasive imaging technique that uses high-frequency sound waves to create real-time images of soft tissues, tendons, ligaments, and muscles. Unlike X-rays, ultrasound does not involve radiation and can be performed comfortably in the clinic.

Why We Use Ultrasound in Biomechanical Assessments

Many musculoskeletal issues in the foot and ankle can present with similar symptoms β€” such as pain, swelling, or reduced movement β€” but have very different causes. Ultrasound helps our clinicians visualise what’s happening beneath the surface, supporting a more precise diagnosis.

During your Advanced Biomechanical Assessment, ultrasound can assist in evaluating:

  • Tendon and ligament injuries (e.g. Achilles tendinopathy, plantar fascia changes)

  • Joint effusions or inflammation

  • Soft tissue abnormalities or tears

  • Bursal swelling or structural irregularities

The Benefits for You

  • Enhanced accuracy: Real-time imaging provides valuable insight, helping to identify the true source of your discomfort.

  • Timely diagnosis: Results are available instantly, allowing for quicker clinical decision-making.

  • Better care planning: Understanding the structures involved enables us to design a more effective and tailored management plan.

  • Comfort and convenience: Ultrasound is painless, safe, and performed on-site during your assessment.
