Nail Surgery

If you’re suffering from an ingrowing toenail, you’ll know how painful and limiting this condition can be. Our Podiatrists at South Dublin Podiatry are able to provide you with a permanent solution within a week!

Nail surgery is a swift and highly effective procedure for ingrown toenails that failed to respond to conservative treatments. It is carried out in the comfort of our clinic by our experienced podiatrists. The treatment involves an injection of local anaesthetic into each side of the base of your toe so it is numb and pain free during the procedure. The affected side of the nail is then removed. This is followed by application of a chemical at the base of the nail to prevent nail regrowth.

Please note: before undergoing a nail surgery procedure, you’ll first need to attend a Nail Surgery Consultation!

Frequently Asked Questions

You may eat and drink as normal before the procedure takes place. Taking the medication that you would normally take each day is advised unless instructed by your doctor or podiatrist. Bring any medication that you think you may need on the day of your procedure. For example, an inhaler for asthma.

The treatment may take 1 hour. It is advised you wear open toe shoes or sandals following the procedure until normal sensation returns to the toe.

You cannot drive after the procedure until a normal sensation returns to the toe. It is advised you schedule an alternative transportation.

Once the anaesthetic wears off the affected toe it may be uncomfortable and the toe may bleed for a short period of time when you get home. Paracetamol is usually advised to take if discomfort is present.

This will depend on the severity of your ingrown toenail and your general health. However, we find the following guidelines usually apply. After 2 days of rest, you may resume most normal activities, except for strenuous exercises. After 2 – 3 weeks, you may restart more intensive exercise or sports.

Before undergoing a nail surgery procedure, you’ll first need to attend a Chiropody consultation. During this appointment, our podiatrists will assess your toe, your medical history, and perform vascular and neurological assessments to ensure the procedure is suitable for you. You’ll also complete the necessary paperwork as part of the pre-surgery process. If you’re a good candidate, we’ll schedule your surgery — usually within a week of your consultation.

For the best healing results, we’ll see you within 48 hours after the procedure to check your progress. You’ll receive dressings and clear aftercare instructions to help your toe heal properly. We’ll also schedule 2 to 4 follow-up appointments to monitor your recovery and ensure everything is healing as expected.
