Tips & Advice From South Dublin Podiatry

Our Tips For Walking The Camino!

Each year, thousands of people set out on the Camino de Santiago, an unforgettable journey that challenges both body and mind. Whether youโ€™re walking for spiritual reasons, adventure, or personal reflection, one thing is certain: your feet will carry you every step of the way.

At South Dublin Podiatry, weโ€™ve helped many Camino walkers prepare for and recover from their journey. Here are our top podiatry tips to help you stay comfortable, prevent injury, and make the most of your Camino experience.

1. Choose the Right Footwear (And Break them In!)

Your shoes or boots are your most important piece of equipment. Choose footwear that:

  • Fits well with enough room in the toe box
  • Provides good arch support
  • Matches the terrain (trail shoes vs hiking boots)

Top tip: Never start the Camino in brand new shoes. Wear them for several weeks beforehand to avoid painful blisters.

2. Invest in Quality Socks

Good socks can make a huge difference. Look for:

  • Moisture wicking materials (avoid cotton)
  • Seamless designs to reduce friction
  • Double layer socks for blister prevention

Many seasoned pilgrims swear by changing socks halfway through the day.

3. Blister Prevention Is Key

Blisters are the most common complaint we see in walkers. Prevent them by:

  • Applying anti friction balm or petroleum jelly to hotspots
  • Using blister plasters at the first sign of irritation
  • Keeping feet dry and clean

4. Keep Your Nails Trimmed

Long toenails can press against your shoes on downhill stretches, leading to bruising or nail damage. Trim nails straight across and not too short before your trip, and maintain them along the way if needed.

5. Manage Moisture

Walking for hours each day means sweaty feet. Damp skin is more prone to blisters and infections.

  • Air your feet out during breaks
  • Change into dry socks regularly
  • Consider using foot powder to reduce moisture

6. Strengthen Your Feet Before You Go

Preparation doesnโ€™t stop at cardio fitness. Strengthening your feet and lower legs can help prevent strain and injury.

  • Try simple exercises like toe curls, calf raises, and balance work
  • Gradually increase your walking distance before departure

7. Listen to Your Body

Pain is not something to push through. Common issues like plantar fasciitis, tendonitis, or stress injuries can worsen quickly if ignored.

  • Rest when needed
  • Ice sore areas when possible
  • Seek professional help if pain persists

8. Pack a Basic Foot Care Kit

Include:

  • Blister plasters
  • Antiseptic wipes
  • Nail clippers
  • Foot tape
  • Small moisturiser

A little preparation can save you from a lot of discomfort.

9. Donโ€™t Forget Recovery

After each dayโ€™s walk:

  • Elevate your feet
  • Stretch your calves and arches
  • Massage tired muscles

Recovery is just as important as the walk itself.

10. Consider a Pre-Camino Podiatry Check At South Dublin Podiatry

Before you set off, a visit to a podiatrist can identify potential issues and ensure your feet are in top condition. We can assess your gait, advise on footwear, and treat any existing concerns before they become problems on the trail.
