Tips & Advice From South Dublin Podiatry

Five Foot Health Myths We Hear Every Week

When it comes to foot health, there’s no shortage of advice online, from social media hacks to well meaning tips from friends and family. Unfortunately, not all of it is accurate!

At South Dublin Podiatry, we hear the same misconceptions time and time again. While some myths are harmless, others can delay treatment or even make foot problems worse.

Here are five of the most common foot health myths we hear every week and the truth behind them.

Myth 1: “Foot pain is just part of getting older.”

The truth: Foot pain is common, but it isn’t something you should simply accept.

As we age, our feet naturally change. The cushioning under the feet becomes thinner, joints may become stiffer, and arthritis can develop. However, persistent pain is usually a sign that something needs attention.

Conditions such as plantar fasciitis, arthritis, tendon injuries, Morton’s neuroma or biomechanical problems can often be treated successfully, helping you stay active and comfortable.

If your feet are stopping you from enjoying daily activities, it’s worth getting them assessed.

Myth 2: “If I can still walk on it, it can’t be serious.”

The truth: Many foot injuries allow you to keep walking, but that doesn’t mean they’re minor.

Stress fractures, tendon injuries, ligament sprains and even some fractures can still allow you to bear weight. Continuing to exercise through pain can often make recovery longer.

If pain has lasted more than a few days, keeps returning or worsens during activity, it’s a good idea to have it checked.

Myth 3: “Flip-flops are fine for walking all day.”

The truth: Flip-flops are great for the beach or pool but not for spending hours on your feet.

Most flip-flops provide very little arch support, cushioning or stability. Wearing them for long periods can contribute to:

  • Heel pain
  • Arch pain
  • Tendon strain
  • Blisters
  • Forefoot discomfort

If you’re sightseeing on holiday or spending the day outdoors, choose supportive sandals or trainers instead.

Myth 4: “I’ll just cut out my ingrown toenail myself.”

The truth: This is one of the biggest myths we hear—and one of the most risky.

Trying to dig out an ingrown toenail at home often makes the problem worse. It can push the nail deeper into the skin, increase inflammation and raise the risk of infection.

If your toe is red, swollen, painful or producing discharge, it’s best to seek professional treatment. In many cases, early intervention can prevent the problem from becoming much more painful.

Myth 5: “Foot pain will go away on its own.”

The truth: Sometimes it does—but many conditions continue to worsen if left untreated.

Small problems often become bigger ones. We’ve seen patients who ignored heel pain for months, only to find that it became much harder to treat later.

The earlier many foot conditions are assessed, the more treatment options are available and the quicker recovery can often be.

When Should You See a Podiatrist?

You don’t have to wait until you’re in severe pain.

It’s worth booking an appointment if you have:

  • Pain that’s lasting more than a week or two
  • Swelling that doesn’t settle
  • A recurring ingrown toenail
  • Thickened or discoloured toenails
  • Corns or calluses that keep coming back
  • Pain when walking or exercising
  • Any foot concerns if you have diabetes

Even if the problem turns out to be minor, getting reassurance and advice early can help prevent it from becoming more serious.

Looking After Your Feet

Your feet work incredibly hard every day. They carry you through work, exercise, holidays, family life and everything in between.

Ignoring pain or relying on common myths can mean living with discomfort for far longer than necessary.

If something doesn’t feel right, don’t simply put up with it. A professional assessment can often identify the cause of the problem and help you get back to doing the things you enjoy.
