Tips & Advice From South Dublin Podiatry

Festival Season is Here – Don’t Let Foot Pain Be the Headliner

From Electric Picnic to All Together Now, summer festivals are one of the highlights of the year. Whether you’re dancing until sunrise, walking between stages, or spending hours on your feet with friends, your feet will be working just as hard as you are.

Unfortunately, festival fun can often lead to sore feet, blisters, sprains, and even injuries that linger long after the last encore. At South Dublin Podiatry, we see a noticeable increase in foot complaints after busy weekends, and many of them could be prevented with a little planning.

Why Festivals Are Tough on Your Feet

A typical festival day can involve walking 15,000–25,000 steps, often across uneven ground, muddy fields, gravel paths, or hard-packed surfaces. Add in hours of standing, dancing, carrying bags, and unpredictable Irish weather, and it’s no surprise your feet can end up paying the price.

The Most Common Festival Foot Problems

Blisters

Blisters are by far the most common complaint after a festival. New boots, wellies, or trainers that haven’t been properly broken in create friction, especially if your feet become sweaty or wet.

Top tip: Wear footwear you’ve already worn several times, and pack spare socks so you can change into a dry pair during the day.

Heel Pain

Standing and walking for long periods can aggravate conditions such as plantar fasciitis, particularly if your footwear doesn’t provide enough support.

If you’ve experienced heel pain before, consider wearing supportive trainers instead of flat canvas shoes whenever possible.

Sprains and Twists

Uneven fields, hidden holes, cables, and slippery ground increase the risk of ankle sprains.

Good ankle support and paying attention to where you’re walking, especially after dark, can make a big difference.

Corns and Calluses

Hours of pressure on the same areas of the foot can cause painful hard skin and corns to flare up.

Having these treated before a festival can make the weekend much more comfortable.

Toenail Problems

Tight-fitting boots or shoes can repeatedly press on your toenails while walking, leading to bruising, discomfort, or even ingrown toenails.

Make sure your footwear has enough room in the toe box, especially if your feet tend to swell during the day.

Festival Foot Care Tips

Before you head off:

  • Wear comfortable, supportive footwear that you’ve already broken in.
  • Trim your toenails straight across to reduce the risk of ingrown toenails.
  • Treat any existing foot problems before you go.
  • Pack blister plasters and a small first aid kit.
  • Bring several pairs of breathable socks.

During the festival:

  • Change into dry socks if your feet become wet.
  • Give your feet a break whenever you can by sitting down for a few minutes.
  • Stay hydrated—dehydration can contribute to muscle cramps.
  • Check your feet each evening for developing blisters or sore spots.

After the festival:

  • Wash and dry your feet thoroughly.
  • Moisturise dry skin, but avoid applying cream between the toes.
  • Treat blisters carefully and avoid popping them unless absolutely necessary.
  • Rest your feet if they’re sore after a long weekend.

When Should You See a Podiatrist?

While sore feet often settle after a day or two, it’s worth seeking professional advice if you experience:

  • Pain that lasts more than a few days.
  • Difficulty walking.
  • A blister that becomes red, swollen, or infected.
  • A painful ingrown toenail.
  • Persistent heel or arch pain.
  • An ankle injury that doesn’t improve with rest.

Early treatment can often prevent a minor issue from becoming a long-term problem.

Enjoy the Music—Not the Foot Pain

Festival memories should be about great music, good friends, and unforgettable moments—not limping back to work afterwards.

A little preparation before you head off can make all the difference, helping you stay comfortable from the first act to the final encore.

If your feet are still feeling the effects after festival season, the team at South Dublin Podiatry is here to help. Whether it’s treating blisters, heel pain, sports injuries, ingrown toenails, or stubborn foot aches, we’ll get you back on your feet so you’re ready for your next adventure.
