Now that we are all in lock-down due to Covid-19, what do we do if our foot starts hurting? What if that old corn starts niggling at us again or the ingrown toenail becomes uncomfortable? With most businesses including podiatry practices like ourselves closed for the next few weeks, it can be difficult to know what to do. Hence, I decided to compile a small list of tips that may help you to prevent foot troubles or give you some relief when your feet get sore.
General Foot Care, Corns and Calluses
Our podiatrists at South Dublin Podiatry Clinic recommend the following:
1. Foot baths – fill a basin with 2 -3 inches of warm water and add about an egg cup of Epsom Salts. Soak your feet for 15 – 20 minutes. Epsom salts help to soothe various pains and aches but they also help to soften the skin making it easier to reduce any calluses or corns. Make sure to dry your feet very well afterwards. Remember about the areas between your toes and give them a good rub with the towel.
2. File away hard skin – using a pumice stone, foot file or an emery board, file down any hard skin. Filing will not remove corns but it will reduce the amount of hard skin on top of them which should give you some comfort.
3. Non-Medicated Corn Pads – these can help to reduce the pressure on the corns. However, please make sure if you are looking for corn pads to always choose NON-MEDICATED ones. Corn pads which come with salicylic acid, can damage the skin around the corn and can lead to serious consequences, especially in those with diabetes or reduced sensation in their feet. You may also buy small strips of chiropody felt in the chemist, cut them into small circles and cut out the inside to make your own corn pad. If you suffer with corns between your toes, simply adding some cotton wool between them may help to reduce the pressure and friction in the area giving you some relief.
4. Moisturise. Moisturise. Moisturise. Choose a urea based foot cream, like CCS. Foot creams which contain urea, help to regulate our skin’s moisture content unlike regular body lotions. Apply a thin layer of the cream to the entire sole of your foot and the area on top of the foot. Avoid applying the cream between your toes – we want to make sure this area stays always dry.
